Résumé : | John Emmet Hughes endeavors in this slender readable volume to explain the relationship between the modern "liberal" society and the Christian Church. He has sketched the genealogy of the present conflict, particularly ftom the breakdown of certain mediaeval institutions through the rationalism of the eighteenth century to the modern industrial era. He points out the correspondence between the changes in the ideals of the market place and of the states and the evolution of modern philosophical concepts of the nature and purpose of man. To prove fully the actual connection between the principles and the historical facts would requite many volumes and probably was not the intention of the author for it is impossible to show the working out of these philosophical ideals in the modern world in such a brief space. In his style one detects the influence of the writings of Weber, Tawney, Sheen, Arnold and Druecker, which gives him a pleasing freedom in discussion not often found in arguments on religious topics. |
